Boracay is a small island in the central Philippines, 7 km/4 mi long and 1 km/ 1.6 mi wide, right off Panay Island’s Northwest coast. Its beaches started attracting tourists from the 1970’s and were regularly voted among the world’s best throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s. This overwhelming success took its toll on the island, leading to its closure for 6 months in 2018, notably to better the sewage system, unable to cope with the affluence of people. 4 km/2.5 mi long White Beach, on the west coast, is the island’s focal point, and despite the fact that it is over exploited it still is a hell of a beach.

During the 1980’s, Boracay became a backpbacker favorite, later in the 1990’s a party island and travel magazines favorite. It has mellowed down since, having learned from the excesses of the past but still tops the lists of the best beaches in Asia.
