Canggu, Digital Nomad List’s No. 1, Bali

Walk the beach up north from Seminyak. after Petitenget and Batu Belig beaches you’ll find Canggu Beach. It is famous mainly for its vibes, surfing and sunsets, along with close neighbors Batu Bolong, Berawa & Echo Beach. If the latter has world-class waves, Batu Bolong, also known as Old Man, is ideal for beginners, longboards and funboarding. This is as well the place to go for live music and late-night parties. These salt & pepper sand beaches are not only frequented by surfers, tourists or clubbers, they are as well extremely popular with local families, expats and dog walkers. Batu Bolong has become a digital nomads hot spot with the corresponding co-working spaces, cafes, bars, restaurants & guest houses that cater for them. In another words, the hipster capital of Bali has much to offer, and while some hate the place, for most visitors its love at first sight.

Canggu as a Digital Nomad.

Canggu tops the lists of the digital nomads’s most sought-after locations, debunking Chiang Mai, Lisbon or Playa del Carmen. It has top-rate internet speed, good year-round weather, unimitable vibes, exuberant food scene, good surf and joyous nightlife. You can splurge when things are going good and live cheap when more challenging times come around. It feels like a tribe: Canggu is the only touristic spot in Bali that is still lively in this covid era. And then there’s the beach, the surfing, the overall safety, the funky homestays and delirious private villas, the beach clubs, the gyms, the yoga classes, the massages, the temples – some right on the beach like at Batu Bolong – and the rest of Bali a bike ride away…

What is canggu known for?

We’ve seen that Canggu is famous for its surf breaks, sunsets, laid-back vibes, hipsters, brunch spots and cafes but let’s not forget the landmark that copped instagram and facebook posts over the last 3 years: The Shortcut. This is a narrow brick lane that cross the paddy fields between Berawa and Batu Bolong beaches, the two main Canggu hubs. Totally empty in the mornings, it’s a huge mess of a traffic jam in the afternoons until well after sunset and the scene of many involuntary and much documented motorbike falls into the rice fields, provoking lots of social media sneering.

Is Canggu Bali safe?

Yes, Canggu is safe but as tourism grew, so did petty crimes. Bags and phones snatching have risen the last 2 years, maybe because the area feels so safe that many are led to think that nothing bad will ever happen. Well, that’s not the case, but taking a few precautions, like keeping your belongings out of reach or even better hidden in your bike seat, will be enough to avoid those fun-spoiling mishaps.
