Cozy and beautiful Phi Phi beach with its traditional boats moored on its white sand

Long Beach, Phi Phi island, Thailand

Wonderful Long Beach in Phi Phi island (or Koh Phi Phi) is so peaceful and quiet that it blurs the Phuket madness into improbable memories. The white sand and turquoise blue waters are virginal and the shade provided by the lush vegetation that fringe the beach is enticing. Yet Koh Phi Phi is not even 40 km/24 mi away to the east from Phuket; 25 km/16 mi to the west of the Malay Peninsula. Shaped like a horizontally flipped “h”, it is under 8 km/5 mi at its longest and 3.5 km/2.1 mi at its widest.

Is it worth staying in Phi Phi?

Of course!!! It’s absolutely worth it staying in Phi Phi for a few days! For its fantastic diving and snorkeling, the divine quietness of Long Beach, the boat tours to other 5 islands of the group, or the nightlife in Phi Phi Town; Phi Phi has a bag full of tricks and you can easily switch from full activity to total stillness, from party mode to meditation trance, at your whim, after all you’re on holiday!

Things to do in Phi Phi Long Beach.

Directly off Long Beach, don’t expect to see the best corals, but the marine life is good enough… Shark Point is about 300 m/1.000ft from the beach’s south end for the more experienced snorkelers as mid tide currents can be strong. Go before 9am or after 5pm when there is less boat activity. Many boats offer snorkeling trips in the island group and they are totally worth it.

Scuba Diving

Nice and easy dives overall, make sure go to Koh Bida Nai and Koh Bida Nok, for their swimthroughs, walls and the sleepy Leopard sharks on the sandy bottom. A fantastic place to become a certified, hook-for-life scuba diver.

It’s self-explanatory, so we won’t dwell on it.

Can you walk to Long Beach, Koh Phi Phi?

Yes, you can walk to Tonsai Village from Long Beach, there is a trail at the north end of the beach through the “jungle”. It’s actually a nice 20 mn walk, not all that hard and doable in flip-flops. Take a torch if you do it at night.

Phuket is fun and beautiful, but no match for Koh Phi Phi. The vibe is totally different too. Even if mass tourism has long reached Phi Phi and denatured the site in many ways, it is still a stunning place.

Which is better Bali or Phuket?

Bali has much more to offer than Phuket as it’s ten times bigger: 5.700 km²/2.200 mi² against 543 km²/210 mi². Prices are similar except for alcoholic drinks, much cheaper in Phuket which has as well better service and better beaches. People are friendlier in Bali and speak better english than in Phuket so communication is easier. Scuba diving and surfing are better in Bali. The biggest difference is that Balinese life and traditions are focused towards the land and the mountains while in Phuket life is focused towards the sea. Nightlife is better in Bali too and much less seedier, although it’s more expensive. To resume, if you dream about the sea and getting lost among a myriad of incredible islands, go to Phuket. For everything else, come to Bali!

Not in the Ibiza or Mykonos sense. But the nightlife is right by the beach and a great fun with fire dancers, live music, dance floors and light-hearted banter until sunrise.
